What Happens to Your Dumpster After Pickup?

You call us, we pick up the container, and that's the last you see of it. But where does everything actually go? We believe in transparency — and we think understanding what happens after pickup gives customers confidence that their materials are being handled responsibly. Here's a complete look behind the scenes.

Step 1: The Container Is Hauled to the Transfer Station

After pickup, the container is transported to a certified transfer station or materials recovery facility (MRF) in the Riverside County area. Transfer stations are permitted, regulated facilities that serve as the first step in the waste processing chain. At the transfer station, materials are weighed, logged, and sorted for downstream processing.

    Step 2: Sorting and Diversion

Not everything from your dumpster ends up in a landfill. California has strict waste diversion requirements — meaning facilities are required to divert a significant percentage of collected materials away from landfills through recycling, composting, or other recovery methods.

Materials that are commonly diverted from your load include:

    • Metal: Scrap metal from construction debris, appliances, and fixtures is separated for recycling
    • Wood: Clean lumber and wood debris may be chipped for mulch or biomass fuel
    • Concrete and masonry: Crushed concrete (from our 10-yard lowboy loads) is often recycled as base material for road construction
    • Cardboard: Large quantities of clean cardboard are diverted for paper recycling
    • Green waste: Yard debris and organic material may be composted

Step 3: Landfill Disposal for Non-Divertable Materials

Materials that cannot be recycled or composted go to a permitted landfill. In Riverside County, this includes facilities permitted and regulated by the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) and the Regional Water Quality Control Board. These are managed facilities with liners, leachate collection systems, and long-term monitoring — not simply holes in the ground.

    Why Prohibited Materials Matter

Now you understand why we're strict about prohibited materials. Hazardous waste — chemicals, paint, batteries, asbestos — cannot enter the transfer station or landfill stream. If prohibited materials end up in your container and are discovered at the transfer station, the entire load may be flagged for special handling, which generates fines and liability that flow back to us and potentially to you. This is why we communicate the prohibited materials list clearly on every booking.

    California's Commitment to Responsible Disposal

California has some of the most rigorous waste diversion and disposal standards in the country. When you work with a licensed, compliant dumpster company like Victory Dumpster Rentals, you're benefiting from a chain of custody that prioritizes recycling, minimizes landfill impact, and meets all state and county requirements. That's part of what you're paying for — and part of what makes working with a legitimate local company different from informal disposal options.
